Strategic Vision and Plan 2016-2017
The Eleanor Roosevelt Val-Kill Partnership has adopted a strategic plan to guide the work of the Partnership over the next year and to build our infrastructure as a recently formed nonprofit. We continue our dedication to help realize, fund, and implement a full and inspiring range of visitor enhancements for Val-Kill in partnership with the National Park Service, building on nearly two decades as a successful project of Save America’s Treasures and the National Trust for Historic Preservation. In addition, we are developing capacity for transformative experiential programming that contributes in a significant way to advancing Eleanor Roosevelt’s model as an agent of social change.
This plan and all of the work of The Eleanor Roosevelt Val-Kill Partnership is motivated by our VISION of:
Eleanor Roosevelt as a fierce organizer who took risks and built connections based on respect, intelligence, and compassion, among critics as well as friends, to build leadership and action for social justice.
In order to realize this vision, The Eleanor Roosevelt Val-Kill Partnership’s MISSION is:
To promote and sustain Eleanor Roosevelt’s ideals as one of the world’s most courageous leaders for social justice so that future generations can be inspired through her example. We accomplish this mission by revitalizing her life and work through our support of interpretive projects at her beloved Val-Kill home in public private partnership with the National Park Service. In addition, we build engagement, awareness and action for her leadership on social justice issues through collaborative partnerships and programming dedicated to her ideals in our time.
The mission reflects the following PRINCIPLES that guide The Eleanor Roosevelt Val-Kill Partnership’s work:
- Create projects that tell the story of Eleanor Roosevelt’s uncommon courage and relevance today for a new generation; specifically her methods to create effective social justice, considered pioneering even by today’s standards.
- Support Val-Kill’s revitalization with our National Park Service through interpretative projects and on site programs that enable visitors to experience Val-Kill as a place where ideals were realized and reanimate Val-Kill as the Roosevelts used and enjoyed it.
- Build and convene collaborative partnerships that find common ground with institutions and community partners around Eleanor Roosevelt’s willingness to take risks and individual responsibility and to mobilize collective action.
The Eleanor Roosevelt Val-Kill Partnership has a critical role to play in making ER’s life and work a galvanizing touchstone for our time. Eleanor Roosevelt’s unique combination of political savvy and human empathy contributed to some of the greatest social achievements of contemporary life: the advancement of women’s leadership, the championing of a global consensus and framework for human rights, the support of meaningful civil rights progress in the United States and the pioneering of infrastructure development through the New Deal, Arthurdale, rural revitalization, and Val Kill Industries. Eleanor Roosevelt’s approach to social change is desperately needed today. Our board of directors, staff and advisory committee is comprised of leaders in public life and business as well as ER scholars committed to this vision.
